In the coming weeks, your winter blues will begin to melt away and the excitement of the spring months ahead is sure to spark some green thumb inspirations. So, as you look out at the snow in your backyard space, how about closing your eyes to envision a lively garden display full of vivid flowers, graceful trees, and the dazzling brilliance of low voltage landscape lighting

Consider the size

Whether your backyard is substantial in size or you possess a small, simple layout, there’s no point in making immeasurable plans for a space that you can’t appropriately fill out. So, before you look into the details of your plant selection, decor or low voltage landscape lighting, consider how to arrange your garden design and remember to consider the functional purposes of the space.

Choose a mixture of plants

Since possessing a vibrant selection of plants is appealing to the eye and attractive to the overall garden scheme, it should be considered the most important element of your backyard design. While most homeowners tend to lean towards the outright colorful charm of flowerbeds, they should never neglect the fundamental components behind every great garden shrubs and trees, sprinkling a variety of herbaceous, bulbous and cacti.

There are factors in plant selection

The size of your outdoor space, the geographical climate, the plant’s desirable location, and maintenance are all important factors to consider once you’ve narrowed down your list of must-have foliage. For starters, a vast landscape gives you more opportunity to plant larger greenery, whereas, a smaller space might not be able to accommodate the herbs or shrubs that you were considering. Also, elements like humidity, temperature, and other atmospheric conditions, such as the amount of precipitation, are huge influences as to whether a certain seedling will prosper in the environmental conditions of your backyard space. Together with climate, location plays a key role in the successful growth of various plant materials — this means having access to sun or shade or planting a tree in a center-based garden bed, rather than on the boundary line between properties. Lastly, maintenance should also be a consideration for your garden structure, especially if you want to plant lots of trees or hedges that will require pruning. While large-scale plantings are great for privacy and wind protection, they do require tons of hard work to keep them looking healthy!

Light enhances your garden

While it’s pleasurable to view your garden during the day, consider installing some low voltage landscape lighting to highlight areas of interest by night. While there are various types of outdoor lights, including directional lighting, pathing lighting, and well lighting, it’s always best to let the light merge with tree branches, plant silhouettes, and other backyard features to create an alluring uplift right under your covered foliage. Also, consider placing some more low voltage landscape lighting along the limits of your patio area and walkways to enhance footpaths and bring your garden to life year-round.
